Blending text and movement in a dream, I am that I am is a choreopoem about finding one’s identity. It is the reconciliation between the journey forward to new places and the roots that hold one back to the ground. No less important, it is a story of love, power, gender, and sex.
As one performer takes on multiple roles and starts a journey from a barren birthplace to a promised land of abundance, different identities are forced upon and torn apart from the performing body. Yet in the end, all is one, for one, is one: as God proclaims to Moses on Mount Sinai, “I am that I am.” I am all that shall be. I am me.
