What does it mean to be Asian American, especially as a mother and as a daughter? What’s at stake when telling an Asian American story? Even Monkeys Fall From Trees is a one-woman show that attempts to confront and give shape to these questions through performance, wrestling with intertwined identities, family expectations, and cultural tensions. An interrogation of how legacy manifests in an Asian American body onstage—consciously or unconsciously—this piece utilizes memory, language, and documentary film to express how the conceptions and feelings of being a Korean American woman can seem so close yet so far within one’s grasp.
